I have taken this issue to our simulator team. They ask if you have modified Display away from 0.0?

I noticed a uid issue, too, which seems to have resulted in some other error messages. I hope to get an answer to this within a day.

Re:ALP SDK Installation Error 2008/02/13 21:34 Karma: 0
Hi, let me explain the problem:

I was followed the installation instructions, and apparently all goes rigth.

the DISPLAY variable in the session y set to:

:1.0

$ echo $DISPLAY

:1.0

If I set the DISPLAY variable to :0.0

$export DISPLAY=localhost:0.0

the windows manager do not take control of the windows launched by the simulator, and the error is the same,

Thanks for your help

Hi Jorge --

Now I see a message that security died, too.

One recommendation given to me to pass on is to do a factory-reset of the simulator:

alp-simulator --factory-reset

I hope this helps. In the meanwhile I'll check in with the security team for possible causes for that daemon crashing.

Re:ALP SDK Installation Error 2008/02/16 16:52 Karma: 0
Hi Tom, I was reinstalled the SDK form scratch, step by step. additionally, I was re-started Ubuntu in run level 3 to avoid launch the GUI (Gnome GDM), and start the X windows manually, with the startx script. Once in the GUI, I was started an xterm and verified the content of the DISPLAY variable, as follow:

$ echo $DISPLAY
:0.0

Ok, the value is as expected :0.0

now I launch the simulator:

$ alp-simulator

an Window (Virtual Console #5 3I7YI2) is launched with the optput:

starting pid 862, tty '': '/sbin/getty'
starting pid 1036, tty '': '/etc/init.d/rc.shutdown'
The system is going down NOW!

Hi Jorge --

We're still trying to recreate this here. I'm running 6.10 and don't see it so it must be related to running 7.10. I'll download that in a VMware image and see if I find the same.

Are you running directly on hardware or in VMware? I'm hoping that being in VMware won't add any significant differences.

Hi Tom, I'm running directly in a dual-boot partition in my Laptop not in a VMWare virtual machine.

In parallel, I will make the inverse test to try to isolate the problem (installing 6.10 + ALP SDK in an external USB hard disk).

Thanks

Jorge,

I have looked through your output and I must confess I am not sure why it is not working. I would like you try something for me and assuming that fails I would like you to run a script and return the results. The script just collects information about your set up.

1) Try running "alp-simulator -factory-reset". If you have invalid /var partition that sometimes causes the simulator's X-server not to come up. -factory-reset causes this to be recreated. I am not sure that the /var partition is deleted as part of a reinstall. (sounds weird but it is just a loopback filesystem image in your home directory)

2) run the attached file as a shell script on your system. It will create a file called sendme.tgz. I you could mail that back to us I can see what sort of environment the simulator is running in. If you want to open up sendme.tgz you can run "tar -zxf sendme.tgz" to look at the contents. If you object to anything let me know and I will change the script for you.

Thank you for your patience.

David Moffatt.

Re:ALP SDK Installation Error 2008/02/23 01:48 Karma: 0
Hi Tom and David, thank you very much for your help. Today, I've decided to reinstall Ubuntu 7.10 + ALP SDK from scratch, and the SDK works fine!

Well, almost to work with eclipse+galde+alp-simulator. and begun to experiment with the SDK.

The alp-sim, that is launched with an skin, also works, but the Virtual console appear over the phone screen, hiding all, I will send you an screen shoot, but remember that the upload function of the forum is not working yet,

Regards

Hi Jorge --

You should be able to bring the simulator phone window to the front, over the console window. You might be able to increase the resolution of your Ubuntu desktop if your display can support it. I use 1600x1200 on my development machine. I am not sure why but on some laptops I have seen Ubuntu max out at 1024x768 even though the hardware would support higher resolutions.

We have a smaller phone skin coming in the next release that fits even on that small display size. In the meantime you can run alp-simulator to get an unskinned simulator.

Upload should be working now, I was told.
