Any Hope for the Linux Developers? 2008/02/12 01:31 Karma: 0
I read that there's a planned release of the Garnet OS Development tools for Linux, but I was wondering if this was planned for the near future. What kind of time frame are we looking at? I'd love to have access to these tools, but it's not exactly worth running a Windows emulator to do so.

Thanks!

The Garnet OS Development Suite runs on Windows and that's the current plan.

The Garnet VM Compatibility Kit (available now) is available for Linux and Windows. On Linux, it runs as a Linux binary. On Windows, it runs in an ARM emulator. Of course with VMware workstation, you can run the Windows version on Linux or the Linux version on Windows. Or either of these on Mac OS X on x86.

I believe you can use Eclipse in Linux to develop Garnet OS applications. Check out the prc-tools download page or depending on your Linux you could find it in your package manager (I use Ubuntu so I had prc-tools under synaptic).

You will need to install the Palm SDK manually.

POSE (the emulator) runs natively on Linux.

I haven't figured out a way to get the debugger to work from within Eclipse which kinda sucks.

you also have to 'fix' some the header files..
running dos2unix helps with the '' problem.
there is also a problem with case sensitive folder names. a simple link will fix these. some the included files use '<>' where they only need quotes around the file name.

its possible I have gotten the palm SDK samples to compile under linux.

I had the problem with the windows vs unix line endings too (n vs rn) the first time I tried. But now Access has linux versions of the Palm SDK up, if you use that you won't have a problem. Compiling works. It's debugging that I wasn't able to get working (in Eclipse)

Unfortunately, there are no simple/quick steps. It is linux after all

If you have something like Ubuntu, you can use apt-get or their package manager (Synaptic) to get eclipse and then prc-tools. However I do not know what you would need to do for other flavors of linux.

Your best bet would be to go to the prc-tools page and follow the instructions there (it will ask you to install cdt first, which will also be another link with lots of instructions)

edit: I should note here that I do not use Linux for palm development anymore.. it just turned out to be too complicated for me.
